update: Governor Whitmer activates emergency operations center in response to blizzard
Road conditions are very dangerous on Friday, December 23 after a major winter storm hits.
Michigan Department of Transportation road cameras show poor travel conditions, especially in Western Michigan along the Lake Michigan shoreline, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.
In addition to snow and ice, gusts of wind well in excess of 30 miles per hour have created blizzard conditions with visibility of less than a quarter mile in some areas.
To check road conditions before you hit the road, view MDOT cameras at mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/cameras.
Multiple vehicle collisions are likely throughout the day on Friday, and snow is expected, especially through Saturday. The wind also causes drifts, making it a difficult task to keep the roads clear.
As of 10:30 a.m., Interstate 94 was closed in multiple locations in southwestern Michigan due to multiple crashes.
Kent County has 65 MDOT cameras, which can be viewed by selecting the “Kent County” filter on the MDOT website. His MDOT cameras on Interstate 196 and Chicago Drive showed poor visibility Friday morning.
