Tourists’ hotel room burglarized while they napped

While a father and son napped, a thief slipped into their unlocked Deerfield Beach hotel room and stole the dad’s wallet, deputies said.

The father didn’t realize he’d been ripped off until he got a call informing him that a woman had tried to use his debit card to buy $812.90 worth of gift cards at a nearby Publix, said Gina Carter, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives have linked the thief to a woman who had been staying on the same floor as her victims at the Embassy Suites, 950 S. Ocean Drive, Carter said.

In her room they didn’t find the suspected woman, Carter said, but investigators did find the victim’s wallet and property from burglaries committed in July in Oakland Park and Pompano Beach

The woman remains at large. But surveillance video recorded Aug. 2, the day of the burglary, captured footage of the woman at the hotel desk and at the grocery store.

Detectives said she drove a black Mustang, possibly a rental.
