Woman dies days after being hit by train in suicide pact

A woman has died almost a week after a suicide pact with a man that involved lying on train tracks, the Palm Beach Medical Examiner’s Office said Friday.

Mary Ann Ortega and Brandon Weiner, both 29, hugged each other before laying on the tracks, police said. They were both struck by the train July 26. Ortega died Thursday.

Delray police said both were homeless. Weiner is expected to recover, police spokeswoman Dani Moschella said Friday.

Weiner and Ortega were the struck by trains within a week, causing Tri-Rail to examine ways to deter suicides.

: drones to monitor the tracks, and erecting signs that encourage people to call 211, a suicide-prevention helpline. The Florida Department of Transportation plans a public-service campaign on radio, TV and websites urging people to stay off the tracks.
